SuperSport United and Ajax Cape Town will meet in the last 16 of the Telkom Knockout for the third time in the space of five seasons when they clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium today, kick-off at 20h15.
The teams have met in five previous cup matches overall, two of which were in the TKO. In 2012/13, Ajax and United played to a 1-1 draw in the competition before the latter advanced on penalties, while in 2013/14 the Tshwane team won 2-1 at home.
The teams’ most recent meeting in a knockout competition came in the 2014/15 Nedbank Cup, with Ajax defeating their rivals 2-1 in the semifinals.
Overall, the cup record between the teams is dead-even: two wins apiece, one draw and nine goals scored each. United could claim to have a slight edge, having won the only penalty shootout between the teams.
The overall record between the teams is also very evenly-matched: 39 league and cup matches, 15 wins and 44 goals for SuperSport, 14 wins and 43 goals for Ajax. The last game between the teams was a league clash in February this year which the Urban Warriors won 3-1 in Tshwane.
SuperSport won their only Telkom Knockout trophy in 2014, but last year their defence of the title ended in the semifinals when they were beaten 3-1 by eventual champions and crow-town rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
As for Ajax, who won this competition in 2000 and 2008, they were eliminated from the last 16 round in 2015 after suffering a 1-0 loss away to Golden Arrows.
The teams come into this TKO clash in contrasting form: SuperSport defeated Highlands Park 4-1 in a league clash on October 16 to extend their unbeaten run to five matches, while Ajax were beaten 2-0 by Kaizer Chiefs the day before and have yet to record a win this season.
