Thulani Serero faces the possibility of a frustrating four months – watching from the stands – after he failed to complete a move away from Ajax Amsterdam before transfer deadline.
The 26-year-old had been heavily linked with a move away from the club after he was forced to train with the club’s reserves. Serero was also not handed a jersey number by the Dutch giants.
According to the Telegraaf, Ajax were willing to sell Serero for as little as €500k (R8 million), but with no suitors the midfielder ultimately decided to remain in Amsterdam.
Some reports claim that Serero opted to stay put because of a good pay cheque , with the South African to see out the rest of his contract even though the club have made it clear that he forms no part of their plans.
Serero will now hope for a change of fortune, but with competition for places – especially in midfield – at an all-time high, the midfielder is in for a tough couple of months.
