Ajax Cape Town returned to work on Tuesday with their new-look squad starting pre-season ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.
The Urban Warriors have only signed two new senior players in Zimbabwe fullback Eric Chipeta from Chippa United and ex-BidVest Wits striker Jucie Lupeta.
But they have promoted a staggering seven players to the first team from the development ranks, adding fresh blood to cover for departed stars such as Abbubaker Mobara and Riyaad Norodien, and Franklin Cale, Ashley Hartog and Larry Cohen, who were all released.
The new youngsters are goalkeeper Darren Johnson, defenders Sergio Kammies and Shane Saralina, midfielders Grant Margeman, Masilake Phohlongo and Luthando Matheza, and striker Mogamat May.
It was also reported last week that Finland international goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola had extended his stay after initially saying he wanted to return to Europe.
Jaakkola’s unexpected about-turn means the club now has four senior goalkeepers, with the highly-rated Brandon Petersen and Jody February also in the mix.
